Dentures
Dentures – commonly known as “false teeth” – are removable dental appliance replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissue. A custom-made, personalised denture can give you a beautiful smile, restore confidence, and help you to eat and speak with ease.
They are usually made of prosthetic or artificial teeth that are attached to a supporting structure, making them removable. Dentures also provide the most cost-effective means of replacing missing teeth, as they are considerably cheaper than bridges or dental implants.
There are a number of cosmetic and functional benefits to being fitted with a pair of dentures. Whether it’s a partial, full, or removable denture, a properly-fitted set of dentures can improve speech, eating capabilities, and your self-confidence.
Types of dentures
There are several types of dentures available for a patient to consider. Dentures can be made from metal, plastic, acrylic, porcelain, or ceramic – or a combination of these materials. There are also implant supported over-dentures available.
Also known as a ‘full denture’, a complete denture is a removable acrylic replacement for teeth, soft tissue, and bone lost in an entire dental arch – either the maxillary (upper) or mandibular (lower) arch, or both. They are placed on and supported by the jaw, and rest directly on the gum.
If you have a few or several teeth missing, then partial dentures may be the better alternative for you. Partial dentures act like complete dentures, but are smaller and just used to bridge the gap in your teeth. They are usually anchored to natural teeth, gums, or through connective structures made out of either metal or plastic, and can be used to replace the front, back, upper, and lower teeth.
These types of dentures make use of titanium material abutments which are surgically attached into the jawbone. Implant-retained dentures are more stable than conventional types, but are still relatively inexpensive compared to complete dental implant restorations.
As the name suggests, these are either complete or partial dentures which are inserted on the same day, immediately following the removal of natural teeth. Immediate dentures are often the best solution when complete extractions of the remaining teeth is unavoidable.
At ADI, all dentures are custom-fabricated and expertly fitted so that they match your teeth’s shape, size, and colour. After determining that your teeth and gums are in good health, Dr Naidoo will take an impression of your teeth – with dental putty or through digital imaging technology. A wax model is then created based on the impression – to determine the fit and appearance of the dentures to be fabricated. Modifications and adjustments are made on the model prosthetics before the actual dentures are made or fitted. After finalising the model, the final dentures are then fabricated and fitted into the mouth.
NOTE: Dentures are very durable appliances, and will last for many years if well cared for and maintained. However, with wear and tear and poor care, they may have to be remade, relined, repaired, or readjusted.
With their expertise and experience in fabricating and fitting all types of dentures, Dr Naidoo and his team will be able to help you decide which denture option is best for you.
